How to Write Better AI Image Prompts
Writing a good AI image prompt is all about giving the AI a clear idea to work with. The better your description, the better your image usually becomes.
A strong prompt does not need to be complicated. It just needs to explain what you want to see, where it is happening, what style it should use, and what mood the image should have.
The Simple Prompt Formula
Use this structure:
Subject + Action + Location + Style + Lighting + Mood + Detail
Example:
A tiny alien horse creature being lifted onto a cargo ship, stormy ocean dock, cinematic science fiction style, dramatic lighting, epic atmosphere, ultra detailed, photorealistic
This works because the AI understands the main subject, the action, the setting, the style, and the overall feeling.
Start With the Main Subject Your subject is the most important part of the image.
Weak example: A creature
Better example: A strange alien horse-like creature with glowing blue eyes and silver skin
The second version gives the AI much more to work with.
Add an Action
Action makes your image feel alive.
Examples: standing in the rain
running through a neon city
being lifted onto a cargo ship
playing poker in a garden
walking through an enchanted forest
Instead of creating a static image, you are giving the AI a moment or scene.
Choose a Setting The setting gives your subject context.
Examples:
inside a futuristic laboratory
on a stormy ocean dock
in a quiet English village garden
inside a glowing fantasy cave
on a ruined planet under two moons
A strong setting can turn a basic idea into a proper scene.
Pick a Style
Style tells the AI what kind of image you want.
Useful style words:
photorealistic
cinematic
fantasy concept art
3D render
oil painting
comic book style
surreal art
dark sci-fi poster
Try not to mix too many different styles in one prompt. Asking for photorealistic, cartoon, oil painting, and 3D render all at once can confuse the result.
Add Lighting and Mood
Lighting makes a huge difference.
Examples:
cinematic lighting
soft golden light
dramatic shadows
moody blue lighting
bright studio lighting
neon glow
sunset backlight
Mood words also help:
epic
funny
mysterious
peaceful
eerie
dramatic
whimsical
Good Prompt Example
Two garden gnomes playing poker in a front garden, funny facial expressions, scattered playing cards, cinematic lighting, photorealistic style, shallow depth of field, highly detailed, humorous scene
Bad Prompt Example
Make a funny gnome picture
This is too vague. The AI does not know the setting, style, lighting, action, or mood.
Quick Prompt Checklist
Before generating an image, ask yourself:
Who or what is the main subject?
What is happening?
Where is it happening?
What style should it use?
What lighting or mood do I want?
Do I want it funny, realistic, cinematic, fantasy, or surreal?
Final Tip
The best prompts feel like tiny movie scenes. Do not just describe an object. Describe a moment.
