ChatGPT for AI Art: What It Can and Can't Do

ChatGPT is the AI tool most people have already used. It's become the default reference point for 'what AI can do' — so when people discover AI image generation, a very natural question is: can ChatGPT do this too? The answer is yes — but with some nuances worth understanding before you decide whether ChatGPT is the right tool for your AI art practice.

What ChatGPT uses for image generation

ChatGPT doesn't generate images itself. It uses DALL-E 3 — OpenAI's image generation model — to produce images from text descriptions. When you type an image request into ChatGPT, it interprets your request (sometimes elaborating or improving the wording), passes a refined prompt to DALL-E 3, and returns the generated image. ChatGPT is effectively a wrapper around DALL-E 3, with the added capability of using its language understanding to improve your prompts.

How to access image generation in ChatGPT

ChatGPT Plus (paid, £20/month as of 2025): image generation is included. Simply describe what you want in a message. ChatGPT free tier: as of 2025, limited access to image generation. Microsoft Designer (free): the same DALL-E 3 model is accessible for free through Microsoft Designer (designer.microsoft.com) — the easiest way to access DALL-E 3 without paying for ChatGPT Plus.

What ChatGPT is genuinely good at for AI art

Natural language prompts: ChatGPT excels at interpreting loose, conversational descriptions. You can say 'I want something that looks a bit like a 1970s road trip photo' and it will know what to do with that. Prompt improvement: ChatGPT will often improve or expand your prompt before sending to DALL-E 3 — helpful for beginners. Text in images: DALL-E 3 is notably better than most competitors at rendering readable text within images. Iteration through conversation: you can refine through natural conversation — 'Make it more dramatic,' 'Change the lighting to dusk,' 'Add a figure in the foreground.'

What ChatGPT is less good at for AI art

Artistic quality ceiling: DALL-E 3 produces good images but generally doesn't reach the artistic quality ceiling of Midjourney, particularly for cinematic, atmospheric, and painterly styles. Technical control: ChatGPT doesn't expose technical parameters like aspect ratio, stylisation strength, or negative prompts in the same systematic way. Consistency across generations: doesn't maintain consistent characters or environments across multiple generations in the same session.

When ChatGPT is the right choice

You're already a ChatGPT Plus subscriber — no reason to subscribe to a separate tool for occasional image generation. You need text in images — DALL-E 3's text rendering is genuinely best-in-class. You want the most frictionless experience possible — no new accounts, no new platforms, no Discord setup. You're an absolute beginner testing the concept.

When ChatGPT is not the right choice

You want the highest possible image quality — Midjourney and increasingly Leonardo AI produce more visually impressive outputs for artistic and cinematic work. You want technical control over your outputs — if you want to specify aspect ratio, stylisation, and negative prompts, a dedicated tool gives you that. You want to generate a high volume of images — dedicated free tools like Leonardo AI often give you more daily generations for free than ChatGPT Plus allows.
