One of the most satisfying moments in AI art is discovering a style that clicks — one where your prompts start producing images you genuinely love, consistently and almost effortlessly. But to find that style, you first have to know what's available.
Why style matters so much
Style is one of the single highest-leverage elements in any AI art prompt. Change the subject and you get a different image. Change the style and you get a completely different kind of image. A photograph of a city street and an oil painting of the same city street are fundamentally different objects — different emotional registers, different visual textures, different audiences.
Photorealistic
What it looks like: Indistinguishable from a real photograph. Sharp, detailed, true-to-life colours and textures. Best for: Portraits, architectural images, product visualisation, nature and landscapes. How to prompt: 'photorealistic, shot on Canon EOS R5, 85mm lens, natural lighting, hyper-detailed'
Cinematic
What it looks like: Film-grade colour grading, dramatic lighting, widescreen compositions. Feels like a still from a blockbuster film. Best for: Action scenes, emotional portraits, dramatic landscapes. How to prompt: 'cinematic photography, anamorphic lens, colour graded, dramatic lighting, 16:9 widescreen, film grain'
Oil painting / painterly
What it looks like: Rich colour, visible brushwork, texture reminiscent of classical fine art. Best for: Portraits, landscapes, still life. How to prompt: 'oil painting, painterly, impasto technique, visible brushstrokes, Rembrandt lighting, rich colour palette'
Watercolour
What it looks like: Soft, translucent colour washes, gentle gradients, paper texture. Best for: Botanical illustration, gentle portraits, whimsical scenes. How to prompt: 'watercolour illustration, translucent washes, soft edges, paper texture, delicate line work'
Surreal
What it looks like: Dreamlike and impossible. Logic is suspended. Objects and scales combine in unexpected ways. Best for: Abstract creative work, thought-provoking imagery. How to prompt: 'surreal, dreamlike, impossible geometry, Salvador Dali-inspired, ethereal, unexpected combinations'
Brutalist and architectural
What it looks like: Bold, geometric, often monumental. Emphasises raw materials and scale. Best for: Architectural visualisation, abstract art. How to prompt: 'brutalist architecture, raw concrete, geometric, monumental, dramatic perspective, harsh shadows'
Material and texture-led styles
What it looks like: The image is defined by an unusual or striking material — bone china, black obsidian, amber resin. Best for: Product visualisation, abstract art, experimental creative work. How to prompt: 'a [subject] made entirely of [material], product photography, studio lighting, ultra-detailed, photorealistic'
